Ali Watson Trio at The Brink
September 30 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm£8
Hailing from the north coast of Scotland, growing up in Glasgow and studying at the Guildhall in London, Ali Watson is an upcoming artist who certainly appears to be going places. After playing as a sideman for many years in bands such as the ‘Matt Carmichael Quartet’ and ‘Planck Walker’, the 22-year-old bass player has decided to form his own ensemble with award winning young drummer Tom Potter and music school prodigy Tim Lallemant. Written in the spring of 2020, his debut E.P ‘Moss’ Watson claims stands as a positive reflection on themes of uncertainty, balance and taking solace in nature, with inspiration from the works of 20th century absurdist philosopher Albert Camus.
Musically, Watson takes influences from contemporary jazz greats such as Larry Grenadier, Aaron Parks and Shai Maestro as well as Scottish folk and 20th century impressionist classical music. The band quietly transcends traditional genres to produce a set of often complex, but accessible music comprising intricate yet lyrical melodies and thoughtful improvisations. Set to be released on the 2nd of July, ‘Moss’ is a short and sweet dose of light and optimism which you will not regret taking with you on your travels through these unpredictable times.
