Dom Pipkin Ikos Trio @ The Brink
July 30 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm£10
The Soul of New Orleans in the UK
“The best New Orleans band never to come from Louisiana” (Rocking Magpie). “The UK’s best-kept piano secret” virtuoso Dom Pipkin, the only British piano player besides Jon Cleary to play New Orleans’ famous “Piano Night” alongside Allen Toussaint leads his all-star band (Annie Lennox, Tom Jones, Laura Mvula, Paloma Faith) in an orgy of deep funk and RnB straight from the Crescent City.
“Dom brings the whole New Orleans thing to the UK” says godfather of New Orleans funk drumming, The Meters star Zigaboo Modeliste. A regular and longtime collaborator with New Orleans artists Pipkin’s playing and writing is steeped in the tradition of Dr John, Professor Longhair, and Huey “Piano” Smith Every show “builds to a fever pitch and leaves the audience dancing and clapping for more” (Classic Rock Blues). x
Pipkin began playing deep blues in Errol Linton’s band in the 90s, has since worked with everyone from Ray Davies to David Byrne. He also maintains the long term keyboard position in trip hop pioneers Morcheeba with whom he recorded the classic Big Calm album back in 1998. He is a true songwriter, deeply influenced by the New Orleans sound, with piano skills that elicit comments such as “I can’t hold a candle to this guy. He’s a great piano player” – Jamie Cullum. A unique blend of horns, street grooves, virtuoso piano and an irresistible fireball of truly authentic musical energy which has led this band to residencies at Ronnie Scotts and top festival billing.
“…a highly impressive pianist… Fans of Diz Watson, Jon Cleary and
Dr John, as well as their late predecessors, should keep an eye out
for this band.” Blues In Britain magazine
Quite the revelation! ..Lighting up the British blues and RnB scene at the moment, very very good indeed. Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2
